- On March 9, 2017 at age 95, Edward Castiglioni died peacefully after a short illness, surrounded by family at home in Sonoma. He is survived by his son and daughter, seven loving grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren, many wonderful nieces and nephews, and family members in Lucca, Italy. He was preceded in death by his wife Doris, children Steve, Sheryl, Jerry and grandson Danny.
Born in Half Moon Bay in 1921 to Italian immigrants, he grew up during the great depression, a farmer attending school in a one room school house. With the hardships of the time the family moved in 1931 to Pt. Reyes, with the hope that things might be better there. Again, they farmed artichokes, peas and sprouts on that difficult land, cold and sandy. Another one-room school house with the cow corral as a school yard. His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting and beachcombing along the beautiful Pt. Reyes seashore.
He attended Tomales High School graduating in 1939. He then worked in family produce stores in San Francisco, and welding on the waterfront until he enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1942. Stationed first in La Junta, Colorado then to Calcutta, India to the Bengal Air Depot, where he maintained the airplanes bound for the China-Burma run. He loved his time in India and told many stories of his adventures there. Home to San Francisco, he was discharged in 1946.
He met his lovely wife Doris, while driving cab in San Francisco. She was a waitress and he was the cabbie who drove her home after her shift. They were married in 1947. Raising children, Eddy, Vicki and Steve and two step children, Sheryl and Jerry, they celebrated 51 years of marriage before Doris died in 1998.
Ed joined the SFPD in 1948. He spent most of his career at Central Station in North Beach.
He endured the challenging times of the 60's and 70's, all the while making lifelong friends, enjoying the City and loving his job. He retired a Sergeant in 1976.
Ed and Doris moved to Sonoma in 1982. They lived a wonderful life, making many friends and earning the respect of all who knew him. In retirement he took up golf, sporting 3 hole-in-ones giving him the nickname "Ace". He worked part time at the Sonoma Mission Inn Golf Course until the age 90. He also returned to his farming roots, providing his whole family with an abundance of produce grown in his yard. His yearly hunting trips to Tule Lake, with his notorious hunting buddies, Don, Bill, Al and Sara were a glorious time. He traveled to Italy a number of times, staying with family members in Lucca. These were treasured trips as he got to know his Italian family. He was an avid fisherman, hunter and handyman extraordinaire. He will be missed by his loving family who were so fortunate to have him for so many years.
Truly a member of what has been termed, "The Greatest Generation," Ed will also be remembered as a Renaissance Man for his amazing creative abilities. A farmer, hunter, fisherman, carpenter, pipe-fitter, painter, blacksmith, bricklayer, electrician, plumber, welder, glazer, airplane & auto repair mechanic, body and fender man, to all of which he was dedicated to perfection. Most important, he was a family man and will truly be missed by all.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Leo's Church, Sonoma, April 1, 2017.
Internment at St. Francis Solano Cemetery will be private.
