- Olaf A. Myhre, Age 76, of Canyonville, Oregon, beloved father and grandfather, passed away March 10, 2004 after a battle with cancer. He was born February 6, 1928 in Staten Island, New York, son of Olaf and Gertrude (Gunderson) Myhre. He was raised in Staten Island and entered the U.S. Army during World War II, serving at Hickam Field, Hawaii in Communications.
Olaf was an accomplished violinist playing for the Staten Island Symphony Orchestra as first violinist, 5th chair. After the War, he worked for the New York Telephone Company for 30 years. He retired in 1977 and brought his family to Oregon. He loved the outdoors — camping, fishing, and spending time with his family. He also enjoyed playing his violin and listening to classical music, and woodworking.
He is survived by his three children, son, Greg and his wife, Kathy Myhre of New York, daughter, Edith Cramer of Myrtle Creek, Oregon, and son, Olaf and his wife, Irene Myhre of Riddle, Oregon. He had four grandchildren: Aaron (Kim) Traylor, Tara (Christian) Yates, Mark (Kyomi) Traylor and Katelyn Rose Myhre. He also had six great-grandchildren. Olaf and his wife, Edith were married for 30 years. A special light in his life was his granddaughter, Katelyn of New York. He is also survived by two sisters, Flo DeCasto and Grace Borchard of Florida, and his lifelong friend, Stan Christianson and his wife, Nan of Florida, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who love him very much. He was preceded in death by four sisters and one brother.
